Neuromyofascial Modulation and ACL Injury Prevention in Female Footballers: The Role of the Bowen Technique

This presentation examines the contribution of neuromyofascial dynamics to non-contact ACL injury risk in female footballers and introduces the Bowen Technique as a clinically relevant intervention. Through analysis of sex-specific biomechanical vulnerabilities, proprioceptive deficits, and fascial chain imbalances, it explores how Bowen’s gentle, precision-based input may influence motor control, pelvic stability, and neuromuscular coordination. The session integrates current evidence with case-based insights to inform holistic, preventative strategies in female sports medicine.

About Paula Esson

Since 1997 I have been involved with the Bowen Technique as a Sport Scientist and basketball player and have implemented the work into a variety of different scenarios to prevent injury and assist injury recovery, as well as running a very busy practice in the community. Continuously curious in relation to how we can improve and drive our sports clubs to have effective and long lasting rehabilitation programs. Working within the busy environments of professional football and rugby we have challenged the existing practices and have worked tirelessly to calmly introduce tools that work and can be demonstrated to improve a players health and reduce injury rates.

ACL Recovery, Hormone Cycle Training and the Zagreb Bowen Conference 2026

Paula is going to be sharing some of the information on her talk there, "Neuromyofascial Modulation and ACL Injury Prevention in Female Footballers: The Role of the Bowen Technique" and give us a taster of the workshop she'll be leading on the 22nd May in Zagreb on Advanced Knee Injury Care. Plus, we talk about the pioneering work Paula is doing with a new tracking process to watch how they can reduce injury in female footballers by altering their training in line with their menstrual cycle. This work on sex specific biochemical vulnerabilities is a real game-changer for healthy, long-term careers for elite sports women.
